Yolo County, located in Northern California, committed to restoring vernal pool and upland ecosystems on a 320-acre site adjacent to its Grassland Regional Park. The County needed to evaluate methods to eradicate non-native invasive species in wetland and upland habitats that pose a risk to endangered plant and wildlife habitats.

ESA developed an adaptive management program for the site. A significant challenge to the success of the program was federal- and state-listed endangered plants and wildlife that could be affected by the use of herbicides and other measures commonly employed to eradicate invasive plants. ESA's team designed experiments as part of the program that would evaluate several methods for managing non-native invasive species on the site. ESA specialists gathered data on upland habitat, including special-status raptors, wetland hydrology, topography, and soil, and then developed a habitat model as a predictive tool to protect endangered species. ESA implemented a vernal pool restoration plan to restore several historic vernal pools that were impacted by past agricultural activities.

ESA worked in partnership to restore vernal pool and upland ecosystems over several years. Our team monitored the restoration to ensure long-term success and compliance with state and federal requirements as well as a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation grant.
