Ecosystem Restoration and Mitigation


We are pioneers in the planning and design of innovative and self-sustaining habitat restoration projects on the West Coast.

Since the acquisition of Philip Williams & Associates in 2010, ESA has created and strengthened an integrated restoration and mitigation practice. Our approach blends practical, in-the-ground experience with rigorous scientific understanding, built upon more than four decades of implementation and management experience. Our interdisciplinary team of ecologists, hydrologists, biologists, geomorphologists, engineers, and landscape architects collaborate to create practical, ecosystem-based designs.

We are restoring sites as far north as Alaska and south to the Mexican border; and from along the West Coast to Florida. Our team has pioneered some of the earliest tidal wetland restoration planning efforts and published a set of tidal wetland restoration design guidelines, now widely used by restoration practitioners throughout the U.S. We have led the planning and design of the two largest tidal wetland restoration projects on the West Coast, the former salt ponds along the Napa River (10,000 acres) and the South San Francisco Bay (15,000 acres). Further inland, we are designing the restoration of 13 miles of the Napa River and developing plans to restore salmon to the Columbia and San Joaquin Rivers. Along the coast we are developing innovative shoreline adaptation strategies for sea level rise, mitigating the vulnerability of our beaches, infrastructure, and communities.

We offer the full range of restoration and mitigation services to help clients solve mitigation challenges, from initial planning, feasibility studies, and conceptual design through permits, environmental compliance, and final design. We provide bid documents, construction phase services, and post-project monitoring.
